Our research has demonstrated that toutouwai have a pretty prodigious memory. In 2016 we trained 64 birds how to open lids to get at a hidden mealworm treat. In 2018 we then re-tested half of these individuals, to see whether they still knew what to do despite not having opened a lid in over a year. The results were unambiguous – the trained birds still knew what to do with little to no hesitation.
